The Annual Exhibition "A Serious Exhibition" plays with irony, challenging the distinction between what is considered 'serious' and 'non-serious' in the art world.
According to the Ceramics Studios at New Bulgarian University (NBU), every presentation should carry its own conceptual depth and significance—each exhibition should be one-of-a-kind.
Over the past ten years, NBU’s Department of Ceramics has established a consistent contemporary direction in ceramic art, a path it continues to follow in the current show. One of the main themes this year is the vase—a subject that cleverly balances the trap of tradition and functionality against the freedom and non-functionality of the contemporary ceramic form.
The exhibition features works by 22 students from both the Bachelor's program in Visual Arts, module Ceramics and Porcelain. Digital Forms, and the Master's program Ceramics and Porcelain. Contemporary and Digital Forms. For the first time, such a large number of graduating students are taking part—each of them set to become a resident artist in Jingdezhen, China, known as the “city of porcelain.”
As per tradition, all faculty members also participate, showcasing brand-new, never-before-seen sculptural works. These pieces, created at NBU alongside the student projects, reflect a unique teaching approach that sets NBU’s ceramics school apart.
Many of the sculptures presented in the exhibition will become part of the students' portfolios for applying to international festivals and artist residencies in Jingdezhen.
The annual exhibitions of NBU Ceramics have become a much-anticipated event in the art community, consistently attracting strong public and professional interest.
